• Add Ons: Lets you Install or Delete optional data packages and features, including: Topographic Maps, Wikipedia Articles, Wikivoyage Travel Guides, etc.
  • GPS & Compass: For devices which have a built-in GPS or are used with an external GPS device, this section offers many settings specific to GPS, Compass, Track Recording and Route Navigation.
    • Map Rotation: Orient the map North up (default), Course up (direction of movement; based on GPS readings), or Heading up (direction facing; based on Compass readings). Hybrid mode alternates between Course and Heading modes depending on your speed and other factors. Note that this setting does not mean that map rotation is always activated. Instead when this setting is enabled, a rotation button is provided on the map for you to easily toggle rotation off and on (on to this setting choice).
    • GPS Arrow: Lets you choose between a dot and an arrow indicator for the GPS location on the map. The arrow may be configured to use either Course (direction of movement; based on GPS readings) or Heading (direction device is facing; based on compass readings) info. This can be very helpful for orientation, especially when on foot or bike in an unknown area. When using the Heading option, be sure to check the accuracy of the compass reading and re-calibrate it if needed. Hybrid mode alternates between Course and Heading depending on your speed and other factors.
    • GPS Position: Choose whether your current location is shown in the center of the map or offset based on the GPS Arrow setting (shows more of whats ahead).
    • GPS Info Display: Choose large heads-up style GPS info display, small text (default), or hide it completely. This setting is iPhone only, iPad always shows a large info display. The Hybrid mode uses Large format when in Portrait orientation and uses Small format in the more vertically space constrained Landscape orientation.
    • GPS Accuracy: Controls the accuracy requested of the GPS hardware. Note that higher settings may result in increased battery usage but will also give more accurate locations.
    • GPS Track Recording:
      • Required Accuracy: Minimum accuracy of a GPS reading to consider it for inclusion in track recording. This will filter out samples which to not report the specified accuracy. We strongly recommend you keep this on the default 200m option unless you have good reason to change it. Setting it to 10m for example, will cause track recordings to skip samples and show a straight line anytime the GPS hardware reports a potential margin of error greater than 10m, even though it may be correct or correct enough that is better to record it than skip it!
      • Minimum Distance Moved: The minimum distance required since the last recorded location sample in order to consider it for inclusion in track recording. Setting this to 5m, 10m or 20m can help reduce jitter on the track path and help result in a more accurate reported distance.
      • Minimum Time Elapsed: The minimum time required to have passed since the last recorded location sample. Note that external GPS devices often report at a very high frequency such as 10 times per second. We recommend using the 1s option for such devices and against using the 0s option unless you really need this high precision recording. Using 0s with external GPS devices will result in 10x larger track data.
      • Minimum Speed: The minimum instanteous speed required for a GPS sample to be included in the track recording. Setting this to 2kph or higher can result in less jitter in the recorded track and a more accurate reported distance. Be careful not to set it too high according to the type of movement you intend to record (walking, cycling, driving, etc).
      • Track Auto Hidden:Default map visibility option to use on new tracks. A non-Hidden track does not disappear from the map when you close it.
      • New Track Color:Default color to use for new tracks.
    • Routes & Navigation:
      • Voice Navigation: Enables/Disables voice guided navigation instructions.
      • Offcourse Navigation: Auto Fetch Corrections: This setting enable automatic online lookup for route corrections when using route navigation mode and leaving the rotue path. It automatically inserts a new control point at your current location and looks up the changes.
      • Route Auto Save: Automatically save new routes when built with the route building screen. Note even when on, routes created from your current location will not be automatically saved because presumably you just want to use it immediately. This setting may be useful if you typically use routes for trip planning and thus usually save them for future use. If a route is not saved, closing the route will prompt you for saving anyway.
      • Route Auto Hidden:Default map visibility option to use on new saved routes. A non-Hidden route does not disappear from the map when you close it.
      • New Route Color:Default color to use for new routes.
    • Advanced:
      • Show Compass: Disables and hides the onscreen Compass (only for devices with compass hardware).
      • Compass Calibration: Prevents iPhone/iPad from displaying the automatic compass calibration message. Note that an uncalibrated compass can yield very inaccurate readings. It is highly recommended that you calibrate the device every time you use the compass. This setting does not need to be on in order to calibrate the device, just rotate the device in a figure 8 motion until the compass reading appears correctly.
      • Compass North: Set weather compass indicators should be based on magnetic or true(geographic) north.
      • GPS Accuracy Circle: Displays a blue circle around the GPS location dot to indicate the accuracy of the current GPS reading.
  • Languages: Controls the language settings for map content, Wikivoyage travel guides and Wikipedia articles (if enabled in the Activities screen) as well as Latin and Cyrillic Transliteration functions allowing you to read phonetically the names on the map without knowing the native language script.
  • Text Size: Lets you increase the size of text labels appearing on the map.
  • Units: Controls the preferred measurement of distances (kilometers or miles)
  • Coordinates: Sets the preferred coordinate system for display of map locations. Available options are: DD, DM, DMS, MGRS, UTM/UPS. You can also Disable the display of location coordinates.
  • Screen Dimming: Lets you disable the normal screen dimming.
  • Zoom Buttons: Lets you disable or set the position of the on-map zoom buttons, which can be very helpful when using the app with only one hand.
  • Automatic Updates: Frequency for automatic checking of in-app map and data updates.
  • Allow Cellular Map Downloads: By default only tiny network requests are allowed over cellular and map downloads are only allowed over WiFi. This setting allows you to make potentially large map downloads over the cellular data connection.
  • Reset Hints: This option will reset the hint messages so that you can view them again.
  • Automatic Downloads: Download Add-on Content: When enabled, optional enabled map content, namely Wikipedia and Topo, will be downloaded when online and looking at a map which does not have that data saved offline already. This means more network data access and potentially slower time to view the map when panning around the map online but can be useful in that you might not want to download the entire area in advance for offline use. Please note that just like regular map data which is automatically downloaded to create the current map view, it is not guaranteed to remain available when offline unless explicitly downloaded in the Manage Maps screen.
  • Advanced:
    • Sync Favorites: Enables/Disables the automatic sync of your favorites to your other devices running Pocket Earth.
    • Map Rotation Gesture: Enables/Disables support for manual map rotation via the rotation gesture (two finger twist motion).
    • Cluster Overlapping Pins: Enables/Disables clustering of multiple pins when they would otherwise overlap. When clustered they appear as black circles with a number to help indicate how many items are there.
    • Map Center Crosshair: Displays a small crosshair icon in the center of the screen for seeing precisely what the map coordinates and elevation labels on the bottom status bar are refering to. The elevation label is only available when Topographic Maps have been installed.
    • Info Screen Shows Timestamps: When enabled, the Info Screen shows the creation and last modified timestamps on your favorites.
    • Show Place Download Areas: Displays yellow highlights on the map when you select any Destination (city, region, or country) that indicates the area which will be downloaded if you choose to download it. Everything in the yellow area will be fully downloaded at all zoom levels. You may notice that this area is generally larger than the Destination itself. This is to ensure all useful data will be downloaded and to allow for more efficient map storage. Even though the larger area means more data will be downloaded for a place, in nearly all cases it is just 30-40% of the size it would be in other offline mapping apps.
    • Allow Overlapping POI: By default there are so many POI on the map that its extremely cluttered. Our app like all others typically hide some of them by default for a cleaner, more readable map. However, if you prefer to see everything, you can enable this setting to allow overlap.
    • Increased Base Map Cache: Downloads an additional 100+MB of mid-scale maps for world wide country overviews. This data is otherwise downloaded only for the places you have choosen for offline use. This can be useful if you find you frequently use mid scale maps world wide, e.g. kind of like a world atlas.
